Did you know that each state has an Unclaimed Property Division where millions of dollars are sent to be held on to until the recipient contacts the division?
The Utah Unclaimed Property Division websites says this, “Each year, millions of dollars in bank accounts, stock certificates, checks, insurance checks, bonds and dividends are turned over to the State of Utah because the owners cannot be located. Some of this money could belong to you! It may take only a couple minutes of your time to see if you or a family member is listed. It’s easy, it’s free and it’s yours.”
On Utah’s website www.mine.utah.gov I typed in my name (first and last) and found that there was money owed to me by a company that I had worked for just before moving to Taiwan to teach English. I must have not received my last check because I was out of the country. All it said was that the company I had worked for sent Utah over $100.00 to hold to until I contacted them. This was over 10 years ago!
Once I verify my legitimate claim on the money they will let me know exactly how much is owed and will cut me a check for it!
This is the Utah government’s official website. Make sure you are on your government’s website before submitting your information.
I searched my siblings and parents names really quick. I found that my dad was owed money by an auto company. He is now going through the process to get this unclaimed property/money sent to him!
The search for my siblings came back negative but perhaps another state they have worked or lived in owes them… Truthfully, I was not expecting to find any unclaimed property because I don’t tend to forget when money is owed to me, but if I was out of the country it makes sense because I no longer lived at the address my former employer had.
So take a few minutes and search the states you and/or your spouse has worked in and lived in to see if you have any unclaimed property/money that needs to be returned to you.
Tip: Make sure to try searching any name you have worked under. (My money was listed underneath my maiden last name).
Happy searching and I hope you find your unclaimed money,
UPDATE- I received my check from the state it was 111.13 it took about 2-3 months to arrive. My dad just received his check and it was just over $450.00 and it took 4 months to arrive. But we were both happy to claim the money that was ours. A friend found $25.00 and another around $75.00.
Here is a copy of the check I received with my personal info blurred out.
